What is Cline?
Cline is an open-source coding agent that runs in your editor, your terminal, your desktop app, and your own products through an SDK. You install it as a VS Code extension, a JetBrains plugin, or the CLI, and the desktop app is a native application for macOS and Windows. It reads your project structure, makes coordinated changes across files, and executes commands in your terminal while it watches the output. Plan mode lays out a strategy to align on, and Act mode carries it out. (cline.bot)
Cline is not tied to one model. You bring your own key and pick from Claude, GPT, Gemini, a local model through Ollama or LM Studio, or any OpenAI-compatible endpoint. Rules in a .clinerules file teach it your coding standards and conventions, and MCP servers connect it to databases, APIs and infrastructure. The project is active and widely used: 70,359 GitHub stars and 11M+ installs across platforms, checked October 2026. (github.com/cline/cline)
What a coding agent covers, and what it does not
Cline is built around one developer and one codebase. It covers the work a developer does at the keyboard: reading a repo, planning a change, editing files, running tests, and reviewing a diff before it lands. That is a large part of a coding job.
A coding agent stays inside the surfaces a developer runs it in: an editor, a terminal, a desktop app, or a program that embeds it. It does not hold a company's shared memory, its rules and connectors, or the record of what its agents did across every team. That work needs a system the whole company owns and keeps.
When a coding agent is not enough: the open-source AI Operating System
Kortix is the open-source AI Operating System: your agents, their skills, your company memory, and every connector in one git repo you own, with the agents working on real cloud computers. Each session runs on its own cloud computer and its own branch, so thousands run in parallel without touching each other. Session work reaches main through a change request, and merge is default-deny for agents. (kortix.com/docs)
Kortix is model-agnostic: any model provider with your own keys, or the ChatGPT plan you already pay for. You can run it on Kortix Cloud, in your VPC, or on your own on-prem network, and self-host is free. Connector credentials are brokered server-side and never enter the machine, and connector rules can allow, ask or block a call down to its arguments. Open source. Read it, fork it, audit it.
